Only a few fragments remain of an Athenian Black Figure deinos, a container used to mix wine and water during the symposium. The fragments show the deinos featured a palm leaf and lotus flower motif on the lip; an animal motif below the shoulder, with a bore, a dear and a siren facing left, and a lion and a bird facing right, a feline and part of a ibex looking to the left. The widest central section of the vase depicted a series of characters participating in a symposium while lying on their klinai (couches) as in the Greek and Oriental tradition. Details of the figures are defined by white and purple overpainting and through several accurate etchings. Some details relate the vase to Sophilos, the Attic vase painter that might have decorated this vase in his maturity (590-580 B.C.).
