The presence of imported objects among funerary goods is clearly connected to itineraries that crossed the Chianti area reaching centers where these objects were produced or distributed. This category of objects includes Etrusco-Corinthian cosmetic ointments vessels and two Black Figure amphorae from the Necropolis of Poggino related to Athenian productions of the last decades of the 6th century B.C. These precious decorated wine containers were used during the symposium (the aristocratic banquet) : they attest to the Etruscan elites’ participation in Greek cultural models. One amphora in fact features a symposium scene in its central panel, highlighting the Greek ideal of the only-men gathering blending different pleasures: wine, music and sex. Under a vine pergola, five couples of men and scantily dressed women (who were heterae and not the men’s wives!) lie among cushions accompanied by the sound an aulos ( ancient double flute) while on a table in front of them lie their wine cups (kylikes).
The other amphora depicts a warfare iconography: on one side there is a frontal view of a quadriga; on the other two men fighting each other with a dead body beside them and two women witnessing the scene – a scene which evokes Achilles attacking Memnon under the walls of Troy to defend the remains of his friend Antilochos.
